In August of 1978, a group of stockholders opened Blue Ridge Savings and Loan in Asheville on the Smoky Park Highway. This diverse group of Western North Carolina businessmen prided themselves on a 6% interest rate for regular checking accounts, introduced a personalized approach to banking, and was among the first in the area to offer 30/60/90 day CDs. They moved their main office location in the early 1980's to Pack Square and changed their organization's name to Blue Ridge Savings Bank, but they kept a branch at the Smoky Park Highway location that to this day is still bringing the personalized banking approach to the people of West Asheville.
